Ocean Freight Expertise

Why Shipping with a Licensed NVOCC Saves You Money

Ocean is the most affordable way to move cargo internationally. To maximize savings, you need a licensed NVOCC that holds high-volume contracts with multiple ocean carriers — not a single-carrier booking agent.

Volume-based contract rates

Pooled cargo volume unlocks pricing individual shippers rarely access on their own.

Multiple carriers, more options

If one line is full or delayed, we reroute to alternative sailings to protect your delivery date.

House bill of lading & liability

We issue our own B/L, giving you one accountable carrier of record for the entire move.

Customs Bond

How a Foreign Trade Zone Improves Your Landed Cost

Goods admitted to a U.S. Foreign Trade Zone are treated as outside U.S. customs territory. For importers holding inventory in Miami, that creates real financial flexibility.

  • Duty deferral — pay duties only when goods leave the zone for the U.S. market.
  • Duty elimination on re-exports — ideal for Latin American redistribution.
  • Inverted tariff relief — potential savings when finished goods carry a lower rate than components.
  • No duty on waste or scrap — duties apply only to goods actually entering commerce.

Expert Answers

Frequently Asked Questions from Global Buyers

Practical answers from our logistics coordinators to the questions importers ask most.

What is an NVOCC and why does it lower my ocean freight cost?

A Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) is a licensed ocean transportation intermediary that issues its own house bill of lading and buys space from vessel operators under volume contracts. Because ShipLilly consolidates cargo volume across multiple ocean carriers, you gain access to contract rates, more sailing options and a single point of accountability.

Should I ship FCL or LCL?

LCL is usually cost-effective for smaller shipments that do not fill a container. FCL tends to become more economical once your cargo approaches roughly half of a 20-foot container, and it reduces handling and transit risk. We compare both options for every shipment.

Which documents are needed to clear U.S. customs?

A typical import requires a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, correct HTS classification, a customs bond and — for ocean cargo — an Importer Security Filing (ISF 10+2) submitted at least 24 hours before loading. Some products also need FDA, USDA or other agency approvals.

How does a Foreign Trade Zone save money on duties?

Goods in a U.S. FTZ are considered outside U.S. customs territory. Duties are deferred until goods enter the U.S. market, are not paid on goods re-exported, and may be reduced when the finished product carries a lower duty rate than its components.

Which trade lanes does ShipLilly specialize in?

We specialize in routes connecting Miami and the wider United States with Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, Latin America and China, supported by bilingual English and Spanish coordinators.

Can ShipLilly store and fulfill my e-commerce orders in the U.S.?

Yes. After import, cargo can be received into our Miami warehouse for storage, pick and pack, kitting and distribution to marketplaces, retailers or directly to consumers.
